Taxi...a little yellow taxi...who can go where he likes...just like you page one page two page three page four |
I know that you know what a taxi is. You do don't you. Well, just in case you don't I will tell you what a taxi is. A taxi is a car...sometimes with a driver and sometimes not...that comes to your house, or office, or wherever you are...and picks you up. You then tell the taxi or taxi driver, if there is one, where you would like to go. So this little story is about the taxi...that could not go...anywhere anyone asked him to go. He could go left if a person said go right. But in order to go right he had to make three left turns. He has been to Boston and learned that trick...in Boston Mass. they have signs that say, "If you wish to turn right make three left turns"...It works...but it sure does make things complicated. up a page page index Little Taxi would get up each day...determined to make do with what he had...bright yellow paint, a nice clean window..a very cute little horn that said...Please move...in a very nice voice. He got 30 miles to the gallon of gasoline...and that is very good...but he just had to go the most round about ways to get "round" to where he was supposed to be going too. One morning when the sun was shinning extra bright, and the birds were singing extra sweet...little Taxi got a call from Mr. Jim. "Come at once!" Mr. Jim cried, "I need to be where I was before I got here! Please Do Hurry Little Taxi, Or I shall be very late getting to where I am not!" up a page page index Now little Taxi had some competition in the Taxi business...and his competition...Little Blue Taxi could go where he was asked, could arrive in the most "about" way, and he was very blue, clean, and got good gas mileage. Little Blue pulled up to the corner Little Taxi was waiting on..."Where are you going, Taxi?" asked Blue. "Are you going somewhere interesting?" Now little Taxi had had some bad experiences with Blue and knew better then to answer his questions if he could get out of it. Yet, little Taxi was a very courteous little car, and when Blue insisted on knowing...he told him. Now Blue thought and thought, the entire way to Mr. Jim's house..."I will say, The dumb little yellow taxi is lost...or taking the longest route to go the shortest distance, and that is the same as being lost isn't it Mr. Jim? And, well, I met him as he was being lost, and he asked me to come by and offer you a ride." As he got closer to Mr. Jims house he saw several cars and trucks parked all up and down the streets. Water was coming up out of the fire hydrant, spraying all in its path, Children were huddled together, hugging and tugging at their mother or father, or who was ever there, saying, "Oh please let us go see. Please, please." And if you know children at all, their pleas were very hard to ignore. Little Blue got stuck several houses away from Mr. Jim's house. And no matter how hard he tried he couldn't get through. And as I have explained, taxi's pick people up AT some where...where ever Some Where is...and in this case somewhere was Mr. Jim's house. up a page page index As Mr. Jim waited, pacing back and forth in his house...cars and trucks honking....children pleading to go and see...Blue was trying to come up the street. And suddenly Mr. Jim heard the little courteous horn " Come Out...I am here now..." Out the door Mr. Jim went...not the front door, for there was no room to get about...to many people, cars and trucks, not out the back door, for it was much the same as the front, but out the side door...between his house and Mr. Tweedies house. Down a little walk...right into Mr. Tweedies Alley. Because little Taxi had to go in such a round about way to get about...he knew just what to do when he saw all the cars...for he had been to Boston after all, he made three right turns to turn left...went up the back alley, and made three left turns to go right...and there he was right in Mr. Tweedies Alley Way...So you see...Courteous...thinking little Taxi had the foresight to take all the right lefts and all the left rights...to end up just about right. And Mr. Jim was very glad too, for the ice-cream he had bought was melting everywhere...and he would have had nothing to take to Mr. Blues Birthday Party. Everyone enjoyed the party very much, even though Blue, who the party was for, never showed up. He is still trying to get to Mr. Jim's house...maybe next time he will be a little less sneaky. Naw...not Blue. back to the top page index The End a story by Jo Jansen |
